What to do for Summer near DCU?

Now exam stress is fading and the weather (hopefully) picks up for the summer, it's the perfect time to explore what’s just outside the DCU campus!

You don’t need to go far or spend much – Dublin has plenty of spots that are easy to get to and offer a great mix of nature, fresh air, and things to do. Whether you're sticking around for summer classes, working, or just taking it easy, here are a few ideas worth checking out.

1. National Botanic Gardens – Glasnevin

Just a short walk from DCU, the Botanic Gardens are perfect for a low-cost day out.

You can explore peaceful walking trails, admire rare and exotic plants, or visit the impressive glasshouses. It’s a great spot to switch off, grab some fresh air, or even get some study reading done outdoors.

2. Phoenix Park – Dublin 8

One of the largest enclosed parks in Europe, Phoenix Park has loads of space to relax or stay active.

Bring a bike or rent one there, spot the resident deer, or take a tour of Áras an Uachtaráin. It's also home to Dublin Zoo if you're in the mood for something different. Ideal for a weekend afternoon with friends.

3. North Bull Island – Clontarf

Only a quick bus ride away, this nature reserve has sandy beaches and scenic views of Dublin Bay.

It’s a great place for a swim (if you’re brave), a walk, or even just to hang out with a picnic. Keep an eye out for local wildlife – it’s a designated UNESCO biosphere.

4. Howth Cliff Walk – Howth Village

If you’re up for something a bit more active, the Howth Cliff Walk offers stunning sea views and a bit of a workout.

There are different routes depending on how long you want to walk, and the village is a great place to grab fish and chips after. It’s one of the best ways to get a break from the city without going far.
